Onboard the Polar King, the operation progress around the clock and underwater vehicles are deployed several times a day. Since we arrived at the site on the evening last Saturday, we have been having vehicles underwater for more than 130 hours. Counting hours, we have been in action collecting data and samples with the underwater vehicles for more than 80% of the total time at the Mohn´s Ridge. The students and researchers are working continuously, keeping the vessel and vehicles busy. We are constantly developing new dive plans for the ROVs and the AUV and simultaneously process the collected data to improve the data acquisition.
The project benefit heavily from the industrial participation and collaboration. Thanks to Reach Subsea AS, a very effective and flexible equipment configuration is set up onboard the Polar King from GC Rieber. Together with the Hugin AUV operated by FFI – this is a very capable operational set up. Best practises and standards from the oil and gas industry have been applied and contribute to effective but also safe operations on the Mid-Atlantic ridge. In MarMine we think that a collaboration like this will be the right way forward for further investigations. This type of cooperation may prove to be beneficial also in the future, if it proves possible to bring marine mining industrial.
