Rudy Helmons has been hired as an Adjunct Association Professor in deep sea mining at the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum. He has a master degree in mechanical engineering and he obtained PhD degree Cum Laude in offshore and dredging engineering from Delft University of Technology. During his PhD, Rudy was also hired by IHC MTI (the R&D business unit of Royal IHC, manufacturer of complex offshore and dredging vessels and equipment). After his PhD, he moved fully to TU Delft, where he held a position as a researcher and now as an assistant professor in the section of Offshore and Dredging engineering within the faculty of Mechanical, Materials and Maritime Engineering. His main research interests focus on dredging/wet mining processes and equipment, with a special emphasis on enabling better prediction of and how to improve upon the environmental performance of the equipment and processes. Since 2019, he is involved in various deep sea mining (international) research projects, e.g. Blue Harvesting, JPI-Oceans Mining Impact II.
