Why are there Mountains in Norway, and why should we care?
The origin of the Norwegian mountains is enigmatic and much debated. A well-known Danish geologist stated a few years back, that `If someone asks us why there are mountains in Norway, we cannot provide a proper answer´. The embarrassing fact is that there is no consensus today about why there are mountains in Norway, albeit many models have been proposed. Two main schools exist and the views are far apart both with respect to formation and age of the mountains. We outline the geological framework for the Norwegian mountains, discuss their mechanisms of formation and point to some related and very practical consequences thereof
